Cornerstone is seeking an experienced Data Engineer to join a client-facing project for a leading Japanese consumer products and beverage organisation undergoing a major commercial and technology transformation.
The client is investing in a large-scale Master Data Management (MDM) programme to establish reliable, governed data foundations across multiple business functions and sales channels. This work will support future CRM initiatives, analytics capabilities, and enterprise system development.
You will be employed by Cornerstone on a fixed-term contract and assigned to a project delivered by Cornerstone for the client. The role offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative, international environment alongside business, data and technology professionals from both Japan and overseas.
The role is based in Shibuya, Tokyo, with a hybrid working arrangement.
As a Data Engineer, you will design, build and maintain reliable data solutions that integrate, transform and govern information across multiple enterprise systems.
Your responsibilities will include:
Developing scalable ETL/ELT pipelines and data integration workflows.
Designing and maintaining curated datasets to support master data management, reporting and analytics.
Ingesting and transforming data from databases, APIs, files and business applications.
Cleansing, standardising and reconciling customer, account, product and reference data.
Implementing data matching, validation and survivorship rules to improve data quality and trustworthiness.
Monitoring data pipelines and resolving performance or reliability issues.
Maintaining technical documentation, data lineage and operational procedures.
Collaborating with business analysts, architects, product owners and client stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
Supporting agile, sprint-based project delivery within a complex enterprise environment.

3+ years' experience in Data Engineering, Data Warehousing, Analytics Engineering, or a related field.
Strong SQL development and query optimisation skills.
Hands-on experience designing and supporting enterprise ETL/ELT solutions.
Experience with Snowflake, Databricks, or similar cloud data platforms.
Experience with Azure Data Factory or equivalent orchestration tools.
Proficiency in Python or another programming language used for data engineering and automation.
Strong understanding of data modelling, transformation, data quality and reconciliation processes.
Experience integrating structured and semi-structured data including CSV, JSON, XML and Parquet.
Familiarity with Git, CI/CD practices and production support.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Business-level English communication skills.
Experience with Master Data Management (MDM) initiatives.
Experience with data governance or data quality programmes.
Knowledge of CRM, ERP or other enterprise system integrations.
Japanese language skills.
Experience working within consulting, agency or client services environments.
